Five days is enough to get a real feel for Suriname without needing to fly or take a multi-day river trip into the interior. This plan keeps you based in Paramaribo the whole time, with one full day across the river in Commewijne. See our guide to the best time to visit Suriname if you're still choosing dates.
Days 1 to 3: Paramaribo
Spend your first three days exploring the capital. Walk the Waterkant and the historic wooden inner city, visit Fort Zeelandia and the Suriname Museum inside it, and give yourself time at the Central Market, where Javanese, Hindustani, Creole, and Chinese food stalls sit within a few steps of each other. The mosque and synagogue sharing a fence on Keizerstraat is worth the short walk over, and it's a good introduction to how the city's different communities coexist.
Use one of these three days to eat your way through the city rather than sightsee. Our guide to Paramaribo's best shopping malls and what to eat in Suriname both work well as a loose plan for an afternoon.
Day 4: Commewijne day trip
Take the short ferry across the Suriname River into Commewijne, a 30 to 45-minute crossing that feels nothing like the city you just left. Old Dutch plantation estates line quiet roads good for cycling, and pink river dolphins are regularly spotted where the rivers meet. A rented bike or a half-day tour both work well here, and you can be back in Paramaribo by evening.
Day 5: Flex day
Keep the last day open. Depending on what you missed, this is a good slot for a second look at the Central Market, a river cruise, or simply a slower morning before your flight out. If you want to extend the trip, this is also the natural point to add on a Brownsberg or Brokopondo day trip. See our 7-day itinerary for how that extension looks.
