Suriname's appeal is almost entirely experience-driven rather than sight-driven. These are the experiences worth building a trip around. For operators who run these trips, see our tour operators directory to compare and book.
Jungle trekking
Brownsberg Nature Park, about two hours from Paramaribo, is the easiest place to get a real jungle trekking experience, with trails leading to waterfalls and viewpoints over the Brokopondo Reservoir. Further into the interior, multi-day treks around sites like Raleighvallen push into primary rainforest that's only reachable by riverboat, with a real chance of spotting monkeys, toucans, and other wildlife along the way.
Dolphin watching in Commewijne
Pink and grey river dolphins are regularly spotted in the rivers around Commewijne, a short ferry ride from Paramaribo. Boat tours here typically combine dolphin watching with a look at the district's old Dutch plantation estates, making it an easy half-day or full-day trip from the capital.
Sea turtle nesting at Galibi
Galibi, on the northeast coast near the mouth of the Marowijne River, is one of the most important sea turtle nesting sites in the Western Hemisphere. Leatherback, green, olive ridley, and hawksbill turtles all nest here, with the main season running roughly March through July. Trips typically combine the reserve with a visit to nearby Amerindian villages and require a guided tour to arrange the boat transport and reserve access.
City walking tours
Don't underestimate Paramaribo itself as a destination for a guided experience. The UNESCO-listed inner city, with its Dutch colonial wooden architecture along the Waterkant, Fort Zeelandia, and the Central Market, works well as a half-day walking tour, and a local guide will pick up on the layers of history and culture that are easy to miss on your own, particularly around Keizerstraat's mosque and synagogue.
Choosing between them
If you only have a few days, dolphin watching in Commewijne and a Paramaribo walking tour both fit easily into a short trip. Jungle trekking and turtle nesting at Galibi both work as day trips from the capital but reward more time if you can spare it, and multi-day interior treks are their own separate undertaking best planned as the centerpiece of a longer trip.
