Suriname doesn't fit neatly into the budget categories that work for the rest of South America, mostly because of the gap between what things cost on the coast and what they cost once you need a boat or a charter flight to reach them. These are rough daily ranges to help you plan, not fixed prices.
Three budget tiers
Shoestring / backpacker: roughly $40 to $50 a day. This covers a budget guesthouse or hostel bed in Paramaribo, local meals from warungs and street stalls, and getting around by taxi or on foot. It doesn't leave much room for organized interior trips, which are the single biggest cost variable in any Suriname budget.
Mid-range: roughly $120 to $150 a day. This is enough for a comfortable hotel in the capital, a mix of local and sit-down restaurant meals, some paid activities or a short guided day trip, and reasonable flexibility with taxis.
Comfortable / luxury: $250 a day and up. At this level you're looking at upscale hotels or resorts, private tours and transport, and multi-day interior trips without needing to budget carefully around them.
The city-to-interior gap
These tiers hold up reasonably well for time spent in Paramaribo and the coastal districts. They stop applying almost as soon as you head into the interior. Multi-day jungle or river-lodge trips typically run several hundred dollars a day per person once you factor in guide fees, charter flights or long boat transfers, and all-inclusive lodge stays, since there's no way to do these trips independently or cheaply. If an interior expedition is part of your plans, budget for it as a separate, larger line item rather than trying to average it into a daily rate.
Sample costs
A rough sense of what things cost in and around Paramaribo:
- Local meal at a warung or street stall: 150 to 300 SRD (checked September 2026)
- Mid-range restaurant dinner: 800 to 1,200 SRD (checked September 2026) - Multi-day jungle lodge package (charter flight, accommodation, meals, guiding, typically 3 to 4 nights): roughly $200 to $400+ USD per person, per day, all-inclusive
Domestic flights into the interior are rarely priced or booked on their own. Almost every interior trip is sold as a fixed package through the lodge or a tour operator that already bundles the flight in, so treat the lodge package price above as the real number to budget around rather than looking for a standalone one-way airfare.
Cash vs. card
Cash is still what runs the country outside of a handful of hotels and larger businesses in Paramaribo. See our full money guide for where to exchange currency, which ATMs and cambios to use, and where cards are actually accepted.
