A jungle or river lodge stay is how most visitors experience Suriname's interior, since independent travel past the coast isn't realistic. Lodges range from a short trip out of Paramaribo to genuinely remote camps reachable only by charter flight.
Closer to the capital
The most accessible lodges sit around Brownsberg Nature Park and the Brokopondo Reservoir, roughly two hours from Paramaribo by road. These work well as a one or two-night addition to a shorter trip, combining jungle trails, reservoir views, and often a visit to a nearby Maroon village, without requiring domestic flights or multi-day river travel to reach.
Deeper in the interior
Further into Sipaliwini, lodges like Palumeu, Awarradam, and Kabalebo are reached by charter flight, typically 45 minutes to an hour from Paramaribo's Zorg en Hoop airport, sometimes combined with a boat transfer for the final stretch. Packages commonly run around 3 to 4 nights, sold as a fixed all-inclusive price covering the flight, accommodation, meals, and guided activities. These lodges are where you're most likely to see the wildlife Suriname is known for: monkeys, toucans, and with real luck, jaguar tracks or a sighting. Expect simple but comfortable accommodation, since the appeal here is the location and the guiding, not resort-style amenities.
What's included
Almost all jungle lodges in Suriname operate on an all-inclusive or near-all-inclusive basis, bundling accommodation, meals, guiding, and often transport from Paramaribo into one price, since there's no way for guests to arrange meals or activities independently once you're that far from the coast. Confirm exactly what's covered, especially transport, before booking, since charter flights and long boat transfers are usually the largest cost in the total price.
Booking
Because access and logistics vary so much by lodge, most bookings go through the lodge directly or through a tour operator rather than standard hotel booking sites. See our tour operators directory for operators who arrange interior lodge stays, and our best hotels in Paramaribo guide if you're splitting your trip between the city and the interior.
